Sanyu Babies' Home

Sanyu Babies Home ( Sanyu ) was founded in 1929 as a venture of love, faith and hope by a missionary sister. The mission originated as, and continues to be, to receive abandoned, destitute and orphaned babies of Uganda, regardless of race, tribe or creed and to provide a safe, loving and caring environment for them.

The babies who are brought to Sanyu vary in age from just several hours old up to two years old. They have no known parents or relatives and have all been found abandoned on the streets of Kampala and its neighbouring districts; many of whom have been dumped in garbage bins, pit latrines or ditches by the side of the roads. SBH currently cares for over forty such babies and will look after them til the age of five. SBH is devoted to providing all the children in its care with the essential love, tenderness and affection each requires; including full medical support and educational facilities.

Whilst Sanyu can provide these vital daily requirements, it cannot replace the sense of belonging that comes from the family home. This is why the administration staff, social workers and volunteers work tirelessly to try and reunite these babies with their families, or in failing that, try and find foster and adoptive parents for all the babies, so they too may be loved and cherished by their own family. Failure to reunite these babies with their families or to find new foster/adoptive parents will mean these babies will eventually have to be transferred to another Orphanage or Home, this will usually happen by the age of four, if not before.

Due to the instability of regular income and the high costs associated with caring for such young and vulnerable babies, the home frequently faces considerable difficulties in affording to provide the essentials for the babies; such as baby formula milk, food and medicines, as well as covering the hefty running expenses of the home; such as water bills, electricity bills and salaries. This is why Sanyu is always looking for new sponsors and donors to assist the home financially, so it can continue to provide this most essential and worthy service.

Typical costs include:

• Baby formula milk: ₤25 per month per baby

• Wet-wipes: ₤5 per month per baby

• Fresh fruit: ₤1 per month per baby

• Child carer: ₤35 per month salary

• Kindergarten teacher: ₤50 per month salary
