Mukisa Foundation
Mukisa Foundation (Mukisa) was founded in 2006 to educate and support families with children with special needs. The project involves a home based outreach programme, physiotherapy, counselling, parent support groups, drop-in centre, day care, workshops & seminars, skills training, resource & information centre.
Mukisa Foundation is a non-profit organisation, relying entirely on the kind & generous donations of supporters, patrons.
Mukisa has a comprehensive support centre based in a renovated family house in Lungujja on the outskirts of Kampala. The centre is well equipped with therapy rooms, educational facilities and a spacious garden where children and guardians can learn, play and relax together. The mission of the project is to “support and empower families who have children with special needs”, and its vision is to “create strong family units which will enable children with special needs to lead independent and purposeful lives”
The project involves equipping parents and guardians with the necessary information, techniques and resources required to enable them to understand and handle their individual situations more effectively and to work closely with them to help develop improved strategies of dealing with the circumstances that effects them and their family. Mukisa also provides advice on ‘appropriate technology’; which is the making of special need aids such as corner seats, toys, commodes etc. by using readily available and inexpensive materials which include cloth, paper, plastic, wood etc. MF also provides a counselling service and helps to connect parents and guardians to other help service providers or health institutions and schools according to their need. They provide a parents forum enabling parents to meet and talk with other parents with children of similar disabilities for support.
