Mpigi Project

Primary school fees

Mpigi is a district of Uganda to the south-west of Kampala. In a small community approximately 7 miles outside the town of Mpigi there are approximately 200 children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Although the community has rallied round and provides food and shelter for these children, there is often insufficient money to pay for the orphans and sometimes even the children of the fostering family, to go to school. Mikwano is therefore assisting with the primary school fees of these orphans and the children of the fostering families.

Mikwano Children's Trust - Uganda has identified and contacted two primary school in the local area that are willing to receive these children. In 2007 Mikwano sponsored 38 orphaned children and due to its success has increased this to 180 orphaned children in 2008. It typically costs just ₤30 to cover the primary school fees for a year in this rural district, that's a little over ₤2 per calendar month. If you can afford this or a little more please contact Mikwano Children's Trust - Uganda and help us make a real difference to a child's life. Thank you for your Kindness.

Nseke Primary School is funded by the Ugandan Government under the UPE (Universal Primary Education) Scheme. This means the State will pay for and provide teachers salaries and educational material for the school. However there are many other annual costs the school incurs which the State will not fund, these include building maintenance, exam fees, text books, pens and pencils, lunch costs, uniforms, church fees, toilet facilities. The students are requested to cover these additional costs and unfortunately if these are not met that child is not allowed to attend school.

St Andrew's Primary School is semi-funded by the Ugandan Government under the UPE scheme. As the school is only partially funded by the UPE scheme the school has to fund itself by charging students additional tuition fees. The school does not currently have enough classrooms so instead some of the children congregate in the local Catholic Church or under the shade of a large tree in a field. The school is actively seeking to build additional classrooms with the assistance of the local community, this project is well under way and hopefully the school will have their new classrooms soon.

Provision of water

It is understood that there is only one well to serve the entire community and this well is currently broken. All water now has to be collected rainwater or water drawn from stagnant ponds. There are obviously massive health repercussions, particularly as there is no transport to take the sick to a doctor or to hospital. Mikwano is actively seeking sponsorship to repair or even build a new well.
