Home of Joy
Home of Joy cares for some of the poorest children with mental and physical disabilities of Kampala and its neighbouring districts. The Home provides exactly that, a Home where these children are cared for and loved.
The Home is presently looking after over sixty such children and where possible the Home provides special needs education and rehabilitation. It is severely under funded and relies largely on individual donations for a large percentage of its budget.
Mikwano is sponsoring the provision of mosquito nets to be placed over each of the children's beds and mosquito screens to cover all the windows in the main home in an attempt to reduce the number of children who contract malaria through mosquito bites. Malaria is still the largest killer of children in Uganda.
Mikwano is also sponsoring a special educational needs teacher to assist with a deaf child and a child who has mental health difficulties. The teacher is also currently investigating the provision of prosthetic limbs for many of the children.
